Gaki No Tsukai Episode #860

Episode Number: 860

Episode Title: 浜田の無理やり寝起ドッキリ(Hamada's Forced Surprise Wakeup)

Broadcast Date: June 24th, 2007

Episode Summary:
Hamada ambushes the Gaki regulars (and Heipo) in their usual rec-room, and says there's something he'd like to do: an old school Japanse  "Surprise Wakeup" show, that used to be quite popular.
The regulars are somewhat reluctant to agree, but after some persuasion (direct Hamada style sadistic violence) they agree. Actually, they don't agree, but are told "go to sleep!" by Hamada.
The rest is rather self-explanitory, with Tanaka receiving some of the cruelest punishment. When his pretense of being asleep drops for a moment following the clothespins/nipples/golf-club treatment (Tanaka: "that hurt!") Hamada's reaction is quite priceless: "Why the hell are you awake?!?" He then stomps out in disgust.
After the regulars apologize to Hamada ( he explains, if they wake up, he can't show his "Surprise Gaki" sign at the show's end!) they return to "sleep" and the torture continues.

Episode Analysis:
This episode is primarily a parody of the (what I take to be formerly popular) "Surprise Wakeup" show. Evidently this was quite popular at one point, so much so I've seen similar segments on a large number of Japanese variety programs. It had apparently become so popular and overdone, that the time was ripe for the Gaki regulars to expose it to ridicule.
Of the "surprise wakeup" segments I've seen none of them seemed especially faked-- but it does seem like a trope especially ripe for fakery.
This episode touches on at least two primary Gaki themes, Hamada the Sadist, and the tension between scripted and improvisational (reality show) style comedy that is present in many Gaki episodes. In this way it seems reminiscent of #757, Hamada's Magic show. Hamada uses bullying and outright violence to maintain the fiction of a quite "real" entertainment show.

Important Vocabulary:
無理やり: Forced; Against One's Will
